The Jazz Age Essay The Jazz music of the Big Band Era was the peak of over thirty years of musical development. Jazz was so innovative and different that it could literally sweep the world, changing the musical styles of nearly every country. The musical and cultural revolution that brought about Jazz was a direct result of African-Americans pursuing careers in the arts following the United States civil war. As slaves African-Americans has learned few European cultural traditions. With more freedom to pursue careers in the arts and bringing African artistic traditions to their work, African-Americans changed music and dance, not only in the U.S., but all over the world. For after the war, African American dancers and musicians created work that was not similar by hundreds of years of musical and dance traditions brought from the peasant villages of Europe. The music of Europe had a more base structure. European music through the nineteenth century was melodically based, with a square or waltz rhythmic structure. Differently, much African music has an organization which is based around rhythm and accent, rhythms and accents that may actually shift and move in relation to each other as the music progresses. The big change that took place in music rhythmically was the shift away from the rhythmic structure. African musical tradition tends to count towards the accented beat so that an African may count 2 on the same beat a European would count 1. It is typical of West African music to have rhythms of different lengths overlapping each other, creating shifting accents, sort of like a mix. Ragtime musicians also occasionally used what were called blue harmonies and notes. Blue harmonies and notes used notes that didnt fit into the European concept of melody or harmony. Some of the notes dont even exist in European musical scales, so they were not recognized easily. The New Orleans bands of the late 19th century from which Big Bands evolved were varied. Some were social bands that played popular songs and music for dancing, some played marches and rags for weekend picnics and parties. Others specialized in their own variations on work and blues songs. Big Band Jazz had its start in New Orleans in 1898 at the end of the Spanish-American war. Military bands returned to the port to flood the city with u sed band instruments. And African-Americans interested in music quickly bought up hundreds of these instruments and began to form bands. Starting from square one, enthusiastic African American musicians taught themselves to play. This had two results: unconventional playing techniques and unconventional rendering of popular musical tunes. The playing techniques led to new and interesting sounds entering musicians vocabulary: trumpet and trombone growling sounds, wah-wah sounds, the use of odd household objects as mutes, and others. The unconventional rendering of popular musical tunes led to Jazz. An African-American playing a popular tune would play it adding some African musical traditions, different musical scales and different and complex rhythms. These early Jazz bands played music that was, to put it mildly, loosely structured. A soloist or an instrumental section of the band played the melody and the remaining musicians improvised the harmony and rhythmic embellishments. Many Jazz bands arranged their music by rehearsing it by ear many times until all the musicians were in agreement about what went where, when. These Jazz bands often changed personnel, sometimes on a weekly basis. This frequent changin g also helped the evolution of Jazz, preventing bands from becoming hidebound and determined to have a particular style or sound. On into the 1930s change was the watchword of Jazz. The first Jazz record Livery Stable Blues, coupled with Dixie Jass Band One Step was made in 1917 by a White band from New Orleans called The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. The band was one of the first to bring the New Orleans style of Jazz to New York. After a music agent heard them in Chicago and brought them to New York, where, within weeks, they were a sensation. Soon after their first record Victor records signed them for several more. The music recorded by the band was nearly conventional with no blue notes and only a smattering of ragged rhythms. Even so, the record sold over one million copies and had a profound effect on musicians and the public all over the U.S. As Jazz got popular, many New Orleans-based bands began spreading out across the country, playing in Chicago, New York City, Los Angel es, San Francisco, or hitting the smaller towns. The first Jazz record by an African Americans, was by Kid Orys band recording under the name of Spikes Seven Pods of Pepper Orchestra. The songs Orys Creole Trombone and Society Blues where recorded in Los Angeles in 1922. After 1923 the flood gates were open and African American Jazz became widely recorded. Early stars included other New Orleans musicians like King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton, a Creole musician who, in the early 1920s, recorded over a hundred of his own and others Jazz tunes. Some of the records are solo piano, but many are of Jelly Roll with his band the Red Hot Peppers. These early releases were great hits and record companies began recording nearly anyone who even claimed to be a Jazz musician. While the concept of grace seems like the last theme in this story of murder and selfishness, it is actually represented quite frequently and as a big part of the story line. â€Å"A Good Man is hard to Find† focuses mainly on the personalities and traits of the two main characters, grandma and The Misfit. These two seem like complete opposites, which creates for a very intriguing comparison when it comes to their intelligence and capacity for grace in this short story. The Misfit displays a clear superiority in intelligence through his behavior and actions. The Misfit also has an obvious capacity for grace that exceeds the grandmother by analyzing his thoughts and conversations with the grandmother. The readers can infer that some of the grandmother’s traits are being close-minded and selfish. She lies to her grandchildren, complains about how the present times cannot even compare to the superiority of the past, and manipulates her son. The grandmother displays no self-awareness and is not open to reality and the current world around her. During the conversation moments before the grandmother was shot, her words prove these previous points. She portrays obvious ignorance when she attempts to convince the Misfit that he would never do this and that killing a lady is wrong. It is like she knows him and knows how he thinks and clearly she does not. The grandmother believes he will do what she says just because of her values and what she thinks is right in this situation; Ignorance at its finest. While these points show the weakness of the grandmother, they also prove the superiority of the Misfits intelligence in comparison. All along the Misfit intends to kill the family. Although there may have been moments of grace,  the end result was inevitable. Because of the Misfit’s age, real-world experience, and physical build and the arms he carries, he has a clear one- up in intelligence in this situation. The grandmother is just pleading for her survival at this point, while the Misfit is in control. He bears a weapon that determines life or death in these very moments. The Misfit has a clear strategy for execution of the doomed family. First the parents and children are killed in the woods and the grandmother is saved for last. The Misfit has had to experience much more of the real world than has the family. He has had numerous tough times and obstacles to overcome, while the grandmother and her family have lived sheltered compared to him. Now, the grandmother is placed in a very real situation and does not know how to handle it successfully which gives the Misfit a clear advantage for control. All her life, the grandmother has placed herself higher than everyone else and is now forced to do the opposite and her life depends on it. This intense sign of weakness is foreign to the grandmother and is what ultimately gets her killed when placed against someone of higher intelligence. Capacity for grace is an ongoing theme represented in bother the Misfit and the grandmother. The Misfit shows more capacity for grace than does the grandmother. During the grandmother’s plead to keep her life, she is very consistent in her argument and stays true to her reasoning that she thinks he is a good man and that he would never kill a lady, basically putting words in his mouth and thoughts in his head. She does not back down from her beliefs and keeps trying to persuade him not to kill her, which is the only thing crossing her mind at that moment. During her argument, she talks about Jesus and his actions and even though the Misfit puts on a tough faà §ade, we find that later in the book, his values change from originally stating that â€Å"there is no pleasure in life but meanness,† transitioning to â€Å"there is no pleasure in life at all.† This shows a little mercy and capability of change in the Misfit that is not present in the grandmother whatsoever. These two characters were very unlikely recipients of any grace, but the Misfit showed more towards the grandmother by not shooting her instantly and changing his values drastically. â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find,† shows the conflict between two extremely different characters which creates a very interesting comparison between them. The Misfit takes the lead in both intelligence and capacity for grace when put up against the grandmother. He is more educated in real world situations while she is ignorant and unaware; also the Misfit shows more willingness to change than does the grandmother from her old, close-minded ways. The Misfit is an unlikely candidate to fit these roles but his actions and thoughts prove otherwise throughout the story.

I have been living in recovery from depression and anxiety since November 17, 2006. While living with a mental illness has been a daunting task, I am happy to say that my road to recovery has made me who I am today. Thanks to the love and support of my family, friends, and pastors, I have been able to live a well-balanced meaningful life. By adopting a lifestyle of discipline as well as self- awareness, I have been able to develop an appreciation for all of life’s complexities. These experiences shaped my life and despite the obstacles facing me with law school, I now know that I can face them with both fear and courage. These characteristics are not mutually exclusive. In fact, in those times of my greatest fears and vulnerabilities I discovered my greatest strengths, which has adequately prepared me for the rigorous demands of a legal education. Watson has changed the world in many ways with his discovery of DNA and how it works. In medicine there have been a lot of improvements with vaccines with DNA technology. For example insulin now is being produced from recombinant DNA technology or known as genetic engineering. Scientist has found that bacter ia and even baker’s yeast can produce insulin. They insert the human gene that produces insulin into the bacteria. This has made insulin a unlimited supply meaning the price for the product has gone down and increase peoples quality of life at the same time. DNA has also improved the upholding of laws. It is now possible to distinguish who was at a crime scene with DNA. This has led to many cases solved that otherwise had no other evidence. In Agriculture DNA technology has improved farmers grow better crops by making them immune to disease and pests. They do this by inserting genes from other plants that are immune and insert into the ones they want to protect. This has led to better crops in Africa which has helped fight starvation, and made food cheaper in countries so more people can afford food. These are just a few ways DNA has helped shape the world we live in. James D. Watsons had a huge impact on society with his co-discovery of DNA. The discovery has led to amazing new breakthroughs and new technologies like picking traits and finding out how genes affect our health.
